Protect Pacific Islands Heritage from Industrial Fishing

1 signatures. Let’s get to 8K

The Pacific Islands Heritage Marine National Monument is one of the last truly wild and healthy ocean ecosystems on Earth.

These waters are not only biologically rich – they are also deeply woven into the cultural heritage of Pacific Islanders. For generations, they have served as pathways for Indigenous voyagers who navigated by the stars, winds, and currents, connecting people and islands across the vast Pacific.

Beneath the surface lies a world of breathtaking diversity. This extraordinary monument is home to whales, sharks, rays, and five species of sea turtles. Seabirds nest here in the millions, while ancient coral systems – some more than 5,000 years old – anchor life on the reefs. More than 130 undersea mountains rise from the ocean floor, sheltering deep-sea creatures found nowhere else on Earth.

But this global treasure is under threat, as industrial fishing puts Pacific Islands Heritage’s endangered wildlife, fragile corals, and delicate food webs at risk. It jeopardizes not only biodiversity but also the cultural heritage of the Pacific Islands.

Protecting these waters is vital – for the ocean, for people, and for future generations.

Campaign Goals

Keep Industrial Fishing Out

to ensure Pacific Island Heritage remains off-limits to commercial fishing and extractive activities.

Honor Pacific Islander Heritage

by upholding the ancestral, cultural, and historic importance of these sacred waters.

Protect for the Future

by protecting Pacific Islands Heritage – its ecosystems and culture – for future generations.

Why your voice matters

The current Trump administration has attempted to open 408,000 square miles of the Pacific Islands Heritage Marine National Monument to industrial fishing — one of the largest rollbacks of ocean protections in history.

Established in 2009 under the Antiquities Act, this monument is legally protected and cannot be reduced or eliminated. Yet, its future is under threat.
