The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is pursuing the biggest permitted coral destruction in U.S. history, right in Ft. Lauderdale’s backyard. The proposed dredging at Port Everglades threatens to destroy a vibrant coral reef ecosystem that sustains coastal wildlife, supports local economies, and provides hundreds of millions of dollars a year in coastal protection from hurricanes and storm surges. If all continues as planned, the reef is doomed to the same fate as PortMiami’s, where millions of corals were smothered in sediment — and never restored — during a similar port expansion dredge nearly a decade ago.
