In the middle of a summer plagued by record setting temperatures on land and in the ocean, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak just greenlit more than 100 new licenses for oil exploration in the North Sea.
New oil drilling is in direct conflict with the United Kingdom’s past commitments to be a climate leader. While the rest of the world is racing to advance renewable energy, this action will lead to more carbon emission, derail national efforts to reach net zero, and perpetuate the climate crisis.
Moreover, these offshore licenses put vital and vulnerable marine ecosystems at risk as a spill could wreak havoc on marine life and devastate local tourism and fishing operations. Even more shocking is that around 40% of the areas under consideration for oil exploration are within marine areas marked for conservation, completely undermining efforts to safeguard critical biodiversity and fulfill the country’s commitment to protect 30% of its national waters by 2030.
The United Kingdom is an ocean nation, not an oil nation. We need leaders to invest in a more sustainable future, not risk the health of people and the planet for shortsighted economic and political gains.
